چکیده

Many classical methods in finite population sampling have been developed to incorporate some fairly standard types of prior information about the population. When the prior information does not fall in the standard categories it can be difficult to find procedures which reflect the information and have good frequentist properties. Recently methods based on the empirical likelihood were considered in Chen and Qin (1993) for estimating the median of the characteristic of interest when the median of an auxiliary variable is known. The Polya posterior is a noninformative Bayesian procedure which can be used when little or no prior information is available. The Polya posterior is related to the Bayesian bootstrap of Rubin (1981). See also Lo (1988). One advantage of the Polya posterior is that it has a stepwise Bayes justification and

SUMMARY Consider the problem of estimating the population mean when it is known a priori that the population median belongs to some interval. More generally consider the problem of estimating the population mean when it is known a priori that the median of some auxiliary variable belongs to some interval. In this note we show how the Polya posterior, which is useful in problems where little pri...

Estimation of E(Y) from a Population with Known Quantiles

‎In this paper‎, ‎we  consider the problem of  estimating E(Y) based on a simple random sample when at least one of the population quantiles is known‎. ‎We propose a stratified estimator of  E(Y)‎, ‎and show that it is strongly consistent‎. ‎We then establish the asymptotic normality of the suggested estimator‎, ‎and prove that it ...

Polya Posterior Quantile Estimation for Stratified Populations

We develop extensions of the Polya posterior that can be used to estimate population quantiles in stratified populations. In the simple case with no auxiliary information, estimates based on this extension to the Polya posterior perform similarly to the standard frequentist estimates. The Polya posterior can be extended to incorporate a variety of prior knowledge about an auxiliary characterist...

Estimating Distribution Functions from Survey Data Using Nonparametric Regression

Survey sampling often supplies information about a study variable only for sampled elements. However, auxiliary information is often available for the entire population. The relationship of the auxiliary information with the study variable across the sample allows inferences about the nonsampled portion of the population. Thus, auxiliary information can be used to improve upon survey estimation...

The use of Quantiles of Auxiliary Variables to Estimate Medians

The problem of estimating a population mean in the presence of an auxiliary variable has been widely discussed in the finite population sampling literature. For the problem of estimating a population median, however, the situation is quite different and only recently has this problem been discussed. Chambers and Dunstan (1986) proposed a method for estimating the population distribution functio...
